How we work

What we look for and what to expect from us.

Continuing Legacy through Growth and Disciplined Operations

Kestrel acquires and operates enduring businesses across New England. We are not a fund. There is no exit timeline. We buy to hold, build to last, and reinvest in people and operations over time.

People First

Employees, customers, and vendor relationships are protected. Stability comes first in the transition.

Hands-On Operator

Owner-operator from day one. This is not an absentee investment.

Fair Value

Seller receives fair value for what they've built. No bait-and-switch, no late-stage retrade.

Legacy-Minded

The seller's legacy matters. We respect what you built and will continue building on it.

Permanent Hold

No fund lifecycle, no exit timeline, no pressure to flip. The business stays intact.

Ben Wheeler

Ben Wheeler

Originally from Western Massachusetts, Ben grew up working in his father's feed, lawn, and garden retail business, gaining first-hand experience across the operation, from the sales floor, to the warehouse, to the back office. That early exposure built a deep appreciation for the discipline, resilience, and pride required to run a business and continues to shape how he approaches every partnership today.

Ben's career includes experience in commercial banking and lower middle-market PE operations, where he has worked alongside founder- and family-owned businesses to support strategy and drive sustainable growth. After seeing his family's business transition to institutional ownership, he recognized the misalignment between short-term financial priorities and the long-term stewardship required to sustain a business. That experience led to a clear conviction that there is a better way to support owners through transition and continue the success of great businesses.

Kestrel is built on a simple conviction: enduring businesses deserve enduring ownership. Ben's goal is to be the kind of buyer he would want to sell to, one who pays fair value, respects what has been built, and is committed to the long-term success of the business.

Why a kestrel?

The kestrel is a small falcon native to the Northeast. It's defined by three qualities that describe our approach.

Patient

Kestrels hover and wait. They don't force the moment. We build relationships over time and move only when the fit is right.

Agile

Small and decisive, kestrels adapt quickly. We're not a large institution. We move with purpose and without unnecessary process.

Sharp-Eyed

Kestrels spot what matters from a distance. We look past surface metrics to understand what truly drives a business.
